Top 10 Search Engine Marketing Podcasts
July 31, 2006
Podcasts are the newest way to receive current news, information, and bring conference-like conversations to your MP3 player (or desktop). Being heavily involved in online marketing, search marketing podcasts are my favorite way of turning commutes into productive time. Here’s a list of my favorite marketing podcasts available today.
- The Daily Searchcast. Hosted by Danny Sullivan (who runs the Search Engine Strategies Shows where I regularly speak). This is a daily roundup of the most recent search marketing news. Show time is around 30 minutes. Website.
- GookKarma. Hosted by GoodROI (aka Greg Nailand). The show features regular guests, which creates a nice conversational, easy-to-listen-to podcast choked full of information. While the show is geared towards beginners, often the information is quite relevant to experts. Show time is one hour. Website.
- DuctTape Marketing. Hosted by Jon Jahnce. This podcast is geared towards small business marketing. It features a guest speaker each show who is involved in a new product or feature for small business marketing. While it’s about small businesses, the target audience seems to be those who are involved in local marketing for small businesses. Show time is around 20 minutes. Website.
- SEO Rockstars. Hosted by Greg Boser (WebGuerrilla) and Todd Friesen (Oilman). The show is a conversation between the two of them about SEO topics. If they have an agenda, it’s usually a great show. If they don’t (which happens on occasion) it can be a bit of rambling about their lives, jokes, the SEM community and while usually entertaining, doesn’t offer much insight. You’ll be able to tell within 5-10 minutes of the show starting if you want to listen to the entire podcast. Show time is usually around 1 hour. Blog. Website.
- iMedia Connection. While not a true podcast per se, it’s usually more a recording of their marketing events. Some of the shows are excellent. Other’s aren’t recorded very well as many of the questions come from the audience. If this show were to become a video podcast where the video portion was the power point presentation or screenshot about the topic being discussed - every podcast would be a must listen. Show times and hosts vary. RSS Feed.
- Strikepoint. Hosted by Mikkel deMib Svendsen & Dave Naylor. The European version of SEO Rockstars. As they mostly target US engines, even though it’s geared towards Europe engines, there is a lot of good US information. However, if you live in Europe, it’s a great show as they often go into topics like VATs, commissions, etc which aren’t available in the US, and hence are never discussed on US blogs and sites. As with Rockstars, if there is an agenda, it’s usually a great show. If there’s not, then the topics can be quite random. Show time is usually one hour. Blog. Website.
- Click This. Hosted by Jenn Slegg (aka Jensense). Jen is one of the experts on contextual advertising, and the show is based around that theme. Each show is an interview of someone involved in the industry (often search engine company reps) and provides some interesting insight into the various contextual programs. Showtime is around one hour. Website.
-
Net Income. Hosted by Shoemoney. I’m a bit reluctant to already
include this Podcast as it’s only had a few episodes. The guests so far have been good, and the show content is high quality. I have a tendency to lean towards WebmasterRadio.fm podcasts podcasts (more below), so including it here. Website. - AdAge reports. AdAge has been writing about marketing for many years. One of the preeminent sources of information about marketing. While not directly related to search, adding some marketing flavor to your podcast arena can help your search marketing mix. Show time is usually around 15 minutes. Website. Some Podcasts here (easier to subscribe via iTunes).
- Does your podcast belong here? Feel free to contact me with suggestions.
All of the above shows can be downloaded either by subscribing to the show’s RSS feed or through iTunes. To find the show on iTunes, most of them can be found by searching the store or podcast’s name. For WebmasterRadio.fm shows, you can also search for WebmasterRadio.fm (the .fm is required for iTunes to show all the listings) within the iTunes store. Note: All the shows are free to download.
When examining show producers, there is definitely a theme here. Brandy & Darrin of WebmasterRadio.fm are the leaders in producing online marketing podcasts. If you’re looking for more podcasts about marketing, writing, affiliates, etc - their website is the place to start.
The world of SEM is pretty small, and the community is open with information and exceptionally friendly. If you’re looking to join the community, there are a couple ways. First is to join a forum such as WebmasterWorld (note: I co-moderate WebmasterWorld’s AdWords and Local Search Forums) and jump right in.
The other way is to listen to the WebmasterRadio podcasts live while sitting in the chat room. The fact that one can sit in the chat room, ask questions of others watching and producing the show in real time is yet another way to get both your name known, and to meet others within this community.
At present, I’ve only been a guest on one podcast, GoodKarma (which did not reflect the fact I listed it in my top 10).
